Injury risks likely to increase under Australia's new workplace laws

Proposed new employment laws will hit safety hard across Australia, according to many workplace experts.

New safety laws for Victoria - 17.6.2005
The Bill is due to replace the old Act on July 1 2005. The Bill reflects changes in workplaces and working arrangements since the original Act was introduced, almost 20 years ago.

Workplace safety compromised under proposed new legislation

Workplace experts expect Australia's far-reaching proposed employment "reforms" to seriously compromise safety. New legislation makes fundamental health-related work conditions negotiable: breaks, rest periods, shift lengths. These things must never be traded; they are part of what keeps people from become sick or being put at risk of injury.

It gets worse. Detecting the tell-tale signs of muscle strain and overuse injury - easily Australia's most common and expensive work injury - depends on people speaking up -reporting pain or discomfort, talking to their supervisors, making requests.

What chance is there of this happening wher an insensitive employer can get rid of "troublemakers" - or anyone who speaks up - without fear or penalty /

None at all.

Expect to see a much quieter workforce. And a spurt in painful strain injurie
